Born in 1922. Rev. John Paul Chan founded the Beautiful Gate Baptist Church in the early 1960s. He devoted his life to the Gospel Drug Rehabilitation Ministry as he was troubled and grieved by the pain that inflicted the drug addicts. He even paid visits to the notorious drug hotbed – Kowloon Walled City to preach the Gospel to the addicts. He believed that 『there must be always a way out of any desperate situation』, and was convinced that the Bible’s Promise, 『Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation, the old has gone, the new has come.』

(II Corinthians 5:17) is the elixir or panacia. For this reason, he asked God to provide a locale which can be used as the rehabilitation Centre where drug addicts can have the space to retreat and rebuild their lives. Even though the work presented him lots of hard work and hardship, he was persistent. With God’s guidance miracles did happen one after another, making impossibles possibles.

Since the inception of the Operation Dawn in 1968, the souls of hundreds of thousands of drug addicts and their family members have been saved. Many of the rehabilitated addicts became evangelists, among them some emulated the founder to establish Gospel Drug Rehabilitation Centres both locally and abroad.

His contribution in Drug Rehabilitation was widely recognized in the public eye. He was awarded an honorary certificate of merit from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on 14 June, 1997 in Hong Kong. In the same year, Hong Kong Government Commissioned the Chinese University of Hong Kong to assess the efficacy of the Gospel Drug Rehab, and the effectiveness was confirmed in 1998. In 2000, he won the 『LIFETIME Achievement Award for Distinguished Drug Worker.』 The Magazine 『East Week』 acclaimed him as the 『Father of Gospel Rehabilitation』 and was also known as 『the Trail Blazer of the Gospel Drug Rehabilitation in Hong Kong』 as the Ming Pao put it. On September 11, 2010 he rested in LORD’S bossom peacefully at the age of 88 in the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. Pastor Chan served the Lord loyally all his life and left behind a legacy of gospel Rehabilitation – Operation Dawn.
